The Leapfrog Tag Reader - The Learning Toy For Christmas 2009

The Leapfrog Tag Reader is the latest in Leapfrog's range of interactive learning toys for kids. Designed as a replacement for the highly successful Leap pad reading system, the Leapfrog Tag system is a much more streamlined tool for learning.

The Tag system consists of a pen that children use to point to specially designed books. The reading device at the bottom of the pen "reads" the words and images on the book out aloud through a speaker in the top of the pen. For convenience, the Tag also has a volume control and earplug socket right on the pen, something the leap pad lacked in it basic format.

The system comes in two different color offerings, green and pink, and the range of books is increasing from an opening selection of 15 to a current range of about double that. Books are available for varying age levels and tastes. For those with a classical education in mind, Dr Seuss' Cat In The Hat and Olivia by Ian Falconer would be favourites. Entertainment savvy kids will be drawn to the movie/TV related titles (like Spider-Man, Ben 10, Star Wars and Dora) but rest assured all titles have passed Leap Frog's standard which tend to be pretty high.

As the Tag matures there will be other savvy applications for its unique technology. National Geographic have already released a series of information cards that teach children about different animals including the sounds they make. Whereas the Leap Pad device required books of a certain size to be placed in a reader in order for the device to work, the Tag has no such restrictions so potential applications are endless.

It's important to know that you will need to have access to the internet in order to download the audio component of any purchased book/card system. However, the great thing about having to do this is there are no cartridges to lose, a potential flaw of the previous system.

Another benefit of the internet access component is that Leap Frog have set up what they call the Learning Path, which lets parents to upload their child's progress and monitor the fundamental educational skills being learned while the child reads and plays.

The Leapfrog Tag Reading system has attracted much attention in the year since its release and will no doubt be a popular Christmas gift from savvy parents (and grandparents) in 2009.
